  4. A: It's free!

  7. Q: What are the system requirements?

  9. A: Basically AmigaAMP runs fine on any stock Amiga with at least a 68030-50
  10. MHz processor. However, if you want to be able to play Layer3 without
  11. downsampling and quality loss you need at least a 68060-50. Be prepared to
  12. face heavy system load! :-)
  13. If you've got a PowerPC you can play Layer3 streams in the background without
  14. noticeable system slowdown at all. For the NewGUI (WinAMP lookalike) modes a
  15. graphics card is a must! The GadTools interface works well on the legacy
  16. ECS/AGA display modes though.

  19. Q: Why AHI? It's slowing down my system a lot.

  21. A: That's simply not true! I just performed some tests on a 68040-40.

  25. Q: Why do I get poor sound quality?
  26.  
  27. A: AmigaAMP uses the highlevel device access routines of AHI. The big
  28. advantage of this method is that several programs can play at the same time
  29. through only one physical stereo-audio output. AHI does mixing and resampling
  30. on the fly.
  31. The big disadvantage: If you don't configure it very carefully you'll end up
  32. with AHI degrading the sound quality and eating lots of CPU time. (see above)

  35. Q: How can I archieve 44.1 playback without a soundcard?
  36.  
  37. A: If you have a graphics card (highly recommended anyway), you can have your
  38. audio/video DMA set to double frequency all the time. Picasso96 takes care of
  39. this automatically if you set the environment variable Picasso96/AmigaVideo
  40. to 31kHz. CyberGraphX needs a hack unfortunately, or you can put
  41. C:AddAudioModes DBLSCAN REFRESH QUIET after LoadWB in your startup-sequence.

  45. Q: Why do skins look dithered on my 16/24bit CyberGraphX screen?

  47. A: That's a bug in AmigaAMP 2.0. It will be fixed in v2.1.

  50. Q: I can't get the spectrum analyzer to work. Why?
  51.  
  52. A: The spectrum analyzer needs AmigaOS 3.1 and PowerUP to run. If one of the
  53. two is missing it will be simply switched off. Only AmigaOS 3.1 provides the
  54. fast, effective and system friendly drawing routines that my spectrum
  55. analyzer routine needs. If you don't have 3.1 by now, rush to the nearest
  56. shop and buy it! :-)

  59. Q: How can I use the WinAMP skins?
  60.  
  61. A: All the texture sets reside in a subdirectory called skins relatively to
  62. the place where you've installed the AmigaAMP executable. If you're starting
  63. AmigaAMP from the commandline just add the keyword NewGUI. If you're running
  64. it from Workbench, just add the keyword NEWGUI to the icon's tooltypes.

  67. Q: Do I have to convert the skins first?
  68.  
  69. A: No. Each skin consists of several Windows BMP pictures. If you have a
  70. datatype installed that can handle those, there's no need to convert them. If
  71. you're in doubt you can try loading the pictures into MultiView. If it fails
  72. you'll have to find another datatype or convert the pictures to IFF.

  75. Q: It seems to be playing but I can't hear anything!

  77. A: Probably you've chosen the wrong AHI driver. The driver has to be
  78. configured using the AHI preferences program which should be in your prefs
  79. drawer. Have a look at the manual about how to choose the correct driver.
  80. Due to limitations of some AHI modes you can't always turn the volume slider
  81. higher than 0dB!
